'Tree of Life' - Kalaloch Beach, Washington

Regular price $80.00 $0.00
The Tree of Life - AKA The Kalaloch Tree/The Runaway Tree is a Sitka spruce.
The Sitka spruce is noted for both its towering height and its wide trunk, two characteristics that contribute to this tree’s mystery. This massive tree clings to its parting coastal bluff by twisted thick roots with the majority of the root system now hanging into the existing void.
It still manages to live and thrive, even though its life supply has been taken away. With no soil underneath to support its growth, you wonder how it has withstood the intense coastal storms and the erosion from the stream within the cave. The existence of this tree goes against all the rules of science, a tree clinging to life.
There is mention that a couple has been coming to see the tree for 4 decades. And each year the tree remains in its questionable position, though it’s hard not to notice the dip and sag in the middle. Likely a result of the trunk’s heavy weight. It’s that dip and sag that make continual visitors believe that come next year, the tree will be no more.
