Avatar Grove, Port Renfrew, BC
It measures almost 12 metres (40 feet) in diameter, meaning that it would take at least eight people holding hands to encircle that gigantic trunk. The burl, created by a non-lethal fungal infection that causes the tree trunk to grow giant contorted lumps, is about 10 feet or 3 meters in diameter.
Members of the Ancient Rainforest Alliance discovered these massive old growth trees December of 2009. They found a forest that had survived over 100 years of industrial logging in the Port Renfrew area.
